Organizational Change in 100 Days: A Fast Forward Guide
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (February, 2003)
Average review score:

STERN'S MANAGEMENT REVIEW: MEATY, TO-THE-POINT, ABSORBING!Drawing on their MBA executive teaching, research and consulting, the authors present a framework for rapid implementation of organizational change. They assert that the first 200 days of a major change initiative determines its outcome. Successful change calls for Winning Conditions: correct diagnosis of the change challenge; early development of shared understanding; enrichment of shared understanding; establishing a sense of urgency; creating a limited, focused, strategic agenda; rapid, strategic decision making and deployment; a human flywheel of commitment; identifying and managing sources of resistance; follow-through on changing organizational enablers; and demonstrated leadership commitment. Discussion and examples make this approach clear and applied. The book is very impressive in its scope and depth. It is meaty, absorbing and to-the-point.

Our Greatest Gift: A Meditation on Dying and Caring
Published in Audio Cassette by St Anthony Messenger Press (July, 2001)
Average review score:

Ministry and CaringThis is a great book for all those dealing with the ministry of the pastoral care for the sick or those confronting a illness or death in the family. It demonstrates that although sometimes we cannot take away the physical pain of being sick or dying, often times, the most important part is not adding to the emotional, psychological and more importantly, spiritual pain that those who are suffering often feel. It is a call to compassion through Jesus, who is the best example of compassion that we have.

Why educational models tend to resist changeOvercoming Inertia In School Reform: How To Successfully Implement Change by R. Murray Thomas is a solidly written, eminently practical look at why educational models tend to resist change, and how to bring about school reform improvements in spite of administrative, faculty, and community reluctance. Analyzing cultural, traditional, political, and economic obstacles, as well as means to efficiently support and promote educational improvements, Overcoming Inertia In School Reform is an excellent and highly recommended supplementary resource with sound advice and implications for dealing with a good many more intractable institutions than just schools.

Oxford Book of Greek Verse
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (January, 1900)
Average review score:

Grand compilation on focused Ancient Greek Verse. This book is an excellent source for scholars, students, and those interested in Ancient Greek. It offers some of the best verses in Greek poetry (such as those from Homer, Archilochus, Aeschylus, Euripides, and Menander). I like this book because it allows the reader a foundation for further studies in Ancient Greek poetry.

Pacific Homosexualities
Published in Paperback by Writers Club Press (June, 2002)
Average review score:

A wealth of material on many places"Pacific" in the title is an understatement. There is a very long series of accounts of Siberian sex-crossing shamans, a fascinating chapter on ardent Buddhist warriors in ancient Korea, and of pederastic relationships in Australian aboriginal societies, in addition to rich descriptions of different kinds of homosexual relations on islands in the Pacific, past and present. Japan and Tahiti are the islands with the most extensive discussion. Some of this material was in an earlier book by the author, but he has added discussion of contemprary Taiwan, Japan, Korea, and Indonesia to the mostly anthropological literature synthesized in OCEANIC HOMOSEXUALITIES, an out-of-print 1992 book.

Pauli Murray: The Autobiography of a Black Activist, Feminist, Lawyer, Priest and Poet
Published in Paperback by Univ of Tennessee Pr (June, 1989)
Average review score:

She rides the waves of U.S. social history in this century. An amazing woman and a fine writer, Ms. Murray brings our social history to life by looking at her own. Ms. Murray moved through the century finding new ways to contribute to each phase: from writing in Harlem in the 30's to helping to found N.O.W in the 60's. Denied admission to UNC in her youth because of her race, she said her first mass at a chapel there three decades later. Her intelligence and grasp of social issues is evident in her writing, as is her love of family, her strong faith and her pride in her race. If I am forced to a simple description, I can say this book is like if the Delaney Sisters were social activists. I have given away several copies of this book, as well as her history of her remarkable family. (PROUD SHOES, now back in print so grab it while you can.) The house where she grew up in Durham, N.C. still stands, very near my own home, and her many relatives continue to tell stories about Ms. Murray with pride.
